Best Circuit Troubleshooting Techniques

Mistakes are a part of daily lives. Circuit boards are made with faults in them for example at times some of its components will be soldered in the wrong position, and this makes the circuit to stop working or to work poorly. Circuit board troubleshooting is not an easy thing as it requires your concentration. Fortunately, various techniques can significantly speed up your search for the troublesome aspects which include;

Visual techniques

A visual inspection can help you discover potential issues like burnt out components, overlapped traces, missing components and any signs of overheating. Some problems like burnt components from excessive current can be identified through a magnified visual inspection or smell. Another common indicator of problems sources is the presence of bulging components.

Performing a physical inspection

Another powerful step beyond the visual inspection is through the physical examination with the power applied to the circuit. This is achieved by touching the surface of the circuit board and other components on the board which will help you detect hot spots without having to use a thermographic camera. However, the technique is a bit dangerous and should only be performed on low voltage circuits and take proper safety precautions.

Distinct component testing

This is one of the most efficient techniques of circuit board troubleshooting which is done by testing every component. Check the capacitor, diode, transistor, resistor, inductor and other discrete components can be done by the use of a multimeter or LCR meter. If the components have less than or the exact component value, it shows that the part is good. If the value is higher than the stated it indicates that either the part is faulty or the solder joint is damaged.

Testing the ICs

ICs are one of the most challenging components to check. You can identify these by markings, and most of them can be tested with logic analyzers and oscilloscopes. The best technique is by comparing the behavior of the circuit with that of a known good circuit.

With the use of the mentioned techniques, you can be assured that your circuit board is in good shape to avoid any accidents.
